Grade 6

During this cycle, the students will collaborate with a team in a socially responsible fashion to compare/contrast cultures by responding to a variety of literature related to the collection theme – “Moments of Truth”. Students will practice constructing meaning from text by making predictions, interpreting plot (conflict and character), summarizing key ideas/concepts, and using context clues to determine unfamiliar words. Students will learn to analyze the author’s use of simile. Students will use the writing process to compose an autobiographical incident.

Grade 7

During this cycle, the students will act as lifelong learners collaborating with team members and building relationships while working on individual as well as team projects, presentations and performance tasks. The students will learn to analyze the relationships among characters, setting, plot, and theme in a variety of literature. Students will use the writing process to compose a narrative story.

Grade 8

During this cycle, the goal of my teaching is that students will act responsibly while building collaborative relationships with individuals representing diverse cultures. They will construct meaning from text by determining the main idea, summarizing key details and events, evaluating the narrative element plot (conflict), interpreting figurative language, and using reading strategies to monitor their comprehension. Students will apply context clues to derive meaning of unfamiliar words as they develop a robust vocabulary and will read a variety of genre including selections from African American Literature. They will select, compose, revise, and edit an autobiographical incident.
